In 2009, we organized Garages in Nairobi, Kenya; Accra, Ghana; Kampala, Uganda. See below for more information on each Garage.

Overview: As part of our mission to put African developers on the map to consumers, Samasource is organizing a conference on application development for social networks in Nairobi in partnership with the University of Nairobi’s Department of Computing and Informatics. This event will feature speakers from a range of technology companies, culminating in a Developer Garage sponsored by Facebook, aimed at teaching students and professional programmers how to build applications on the platform and earn a side income. Program 1-1:20pm: Opening remarks by Professor William Okelo-Odongo, Director of the School of Computing and Informatics, University of Nairobi

1:20-1:40pm: Presentation by Leila Chirayath, Founder and CEO, Samasource; Visiting Scholar, Stanford University Program on Global Justice

1:45-2:10pm: Keynote address by Dr. Bitange Ndemo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Information and Communications

2:15-3:30pm: Panel on social networks, technology, and socio-economic development with:

  • Kevit Desai, Director of Engineering, Centurion Systems; Director and Governor of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance; Chairman of IEEE Kenya
